This article comes better late than never! (or December…wink, wink)

I think the one thing synonymous with Fall is pumpkin. Correction, Pumpkin pie. I’m a big fan of a good spicy pumpkin pie. Lots of pumpkin pie spice containing cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, etc. There is something just so undoubtably “Autumn” about it all that I thought it was only fitting to do an article on my delicious favourites around the city of Ottawa that especially pique my interests this time of year.

First and foremost, the Pumpkin Spice Latte. (Starbucks does it best, but I would definitely be open to trying any other forms of the favourite should they be recommended to me!) A little whipped cream and sprinkled with pumpkin pie spice is just lovely (especially served extra hot on a chilly day). However, drinking more than my fair share of these this month is not the best for anyone, so I usually opt for the non-fat no-whip version unless on a special occasion.
(On a side note I did find a healthier alternative recipe for a home-made pumpkin spice latte, once I have a chance to try it myself I will review it!)

Now onto what originally sparked my idea for this review; The Pumpkin Spice Muffin.
There are two mainstream options to choose from in Canada. One being the pumpkin spice muffin from Tim Horton’s or the Pumpkin Cream Cheese muffin from Starbucks. My opinion is that there should actually be a hybrid between the two.
The Pumpkin Spice Muffin from Tim Horton’s is a spicy pumpkin muffin with crispy, spicy toasted pumpkin seeds on the top with a “icing glaze” injected in the middle. The Starbucks Pumpkin Cream Cheese muffin is more a demure pumpkin flavour, however very moist and with a very delectable cream cheese dollop inside.
For my own personal preference, I wish I could combine the two! I find the Starbucks muffin to be lacking that flavour I love so much, however the Tim Horton’s icing choice is cheap and unfavourable.
What is a girl to do?!

Why, head to The Cupcake Lounge of course! My favourite cupcakery in the city so far was offering a seasonal treat, the Pumpkin Spice Cupcake. With a pumpkin pie spice flavoured cake and cream cheese icing this cupcake was everything I wanted the muffin to be and more!

As I set out to write this article, I became more diligent in my quest for fall-fueled eats! Breaks at work were spent running out to different shops to sample what they had in their stores special for the season; all for the sake of research, of course.

I went back to Starbucks to try their Pumpkin Loaf. Meh. There are a lot better (and tastier) things to spend your money on than this. I will not be purchasing again and I wouldn’t recommend it.

On one day I thought it would be a great idea to try the Pear Caramel Black Tea from Sushi Go and a Pumpkin Spice donut from Tim Horton’s. What a lovely mid-morning fall day treat, I thought to myself. Wrong.
Sushi Go did not even have milk or sugar to go with their black tea, so I had to stealthily “borrow” some from the Starbucks down the street (not that I can’t drink black tea without milk, but I thought it would be more complimentary with the flavours at the time).
The pumpkin spice donut was not bad, but not something I’d try again.
The tea was disgusting! I really thought I’d love it, but to my chagrin I begrudgingly had to drink down the rest of the cup. Maybe it was the milk and sugar? Who knows, but I will not be trying that tea again! Yuck.

Thankfully I have found a good tea that’s absolutely perfect for the Fall season. Celestial Seasonings – Cranberry Apple Zinger tea has been one of my favourites for years now. Why I find it so perfect it’s that it’s more reminiscent of a autumn apple orchard. As opposed to the millions of apple cinnamon teas, this tea combines apple flavour with the tart crispness of cranberries (and of course the hibiscus leaves which adds to the tart flavour). So fresh and undoubtably fall! Mmm! :)

On the subject of apples, Alex and I went on a lovely romantic fall evening walk through the Byward Market and up Sussex Drive. We stopped at the Beavertails canteen and ordered hot apple cider to take on our walk and we split a cinnamon and sugar beavertail, delish! That taste of apple cider made me curious to see how the other ciders fare in comparison.
First I went to try Starbucks’s Caramel Apple Spice. I have actually never had this before! I ordered it and they asked if I wanted whipped cream, which seemed weird to me but I figured if that’s how the drink is prepared then I should review it as such! Well..it was alright. It was quite rich and tasted like something I just couldn’t put my finger on. It was when I got back to my office I realized it tasted like I was drinking an apple pie with melted vanilla ice cream. At that point it just became too rich and I tried to scoop out as much whipped cream as I could but the damage was already done. I’d like to try it again next time without the whipped cream.
The next I tried was from Second Cup. Oh my goodness, we have a winner! How absolutely delicious! I ordered a small sweet apple cider and they serve them with cinnamon sticks. This is a lovely warming drink that has a full bodied apple flavour but with a sweet light finish. Talk about amazing, I went back today to order another!
* I happend to notice they also have a Mulled Cranberry Cider, but when I went to order it they said they only have it for sale in the tin, not for preparation sale. How sad! If anyone has tried it, let me know if it’s good enough to purchase!

Something I haven’t had this season yet, but is a favourite of Alex and I’s is the Inniskillin Late Autumn Riesling. If you can get your hands on a bottle, we highly recommend it!

Last but not least on my list of Fall favourites, is Pumpkin Beer. Last year was actually my first time trying it and Alex and I had picked up a few bottles from the LCBO here. This Pumpkin Beer is brewed by Great Lakes brewery and is one of their many seasonal brews. This beer is brewed with pumpkin and also the same spices featured in pumpkin pie spice. It has a subtle flavour of pumpkin, but not enough to overtake the beer. I really enjoy it but I know a few people who do not. I think it’s one of those beers you have to try for yourself and see if you love it!
This year, Alex and I headed to the Clocktower Pub as one of their seasonal brews this year is the Pumpkin Beer. Wow! If I had to choose between the two this would be the winner. I think it’s just a better, fresher beer and when I commented that it was spicier than the Great Lakes, the waitress explained they add a dash of pumpkin pie spice to the beer before serving. Perfection!

There are so many amazing things to eat and drink especially during this time of year and it only gets better leading into the holiday season. Perhaps I’ll have to start a new review of all things Christmas! ;)

Enjoy! XOXO

Smoke’s Poutinerie

I have an unusual entry considering some of my other reviews. I often have to eat dinner out while I’m at work and Smokes Poutinerie is very close to my work. They are also open late so sometimes I end up going after work too.
Curry Chicken Poutine

They have a large variety of toppings and this time I decided to try their Curry Chicken Poutine. This is fries and cheese curds with slow roasted chicken breast with spicy curry sauce. Their large is 8.99 but I felt that it was more than enough and didn’t even finish all of it.

It’s not the greatest “food” but they do have the best poutine around, I would go back, but not for a long time. I once had a very solidified poutine from there once and Victoria doesn’t like it much so for that reason I can’t give this place my full blessing.

I would give this about 2.5 out of 5 stars.

I ordered the Vegetarian Spring Rolls (5 Rolls) for 7.25
Pad Eggplant (Shrimp) for 11.95

With tax and delivery and tip it was about $25.00.

I’m often at work during my dinner time and I have any options for food at my workplace besides take out. My frequent vice has usually been Pizza Pizza pizza since they have a fast easy online ordering system, have good delivery times and can make a pizza (and other food) that I can eat. Unfortunately sometimes I seek out more variety.

A photo of Shrimp Pad Eggplant and Vegetarian Spring Rolls sitting in take out containers. They ar from Champa Thai Ottawa

Recently I have ordered a couple times from Champa Thai here in Ottawa. Their menu looks delicious and this vegitarian dish I had was amazing. The eggplants were delicious and spicy with what tasted like a pepper sauce. Great food, and you can also order via Just-eat.ca a new food ordering service. This lets me order great food from Champa Thai without calling.

All in all I give this 3.5 out of 5 stars, only because the sauce seemed a bit heavy with oil, but it was otherwise a delicious meal. I will definitely be ordering again and upgrading my rating I hope!

1 Pecan Salad $15.00
1 Chicken Fajita $23.00
2x 20 oz Beer $13.00

Total for two $57.00 (aprox)

We recently went out to the Blue Cactus to grab some food at night. I decided to go with a big salad but Victoria was quite hungry so she went for a Fajita.

My salad was fine but Victoria’s fajita came cold and was practically frozen by the end of the meal. She didn’t finish it but we did take it home.

I ate it the following day despite it being pretty terrible. All I really got was an overpriced salad and a beer that I could get anywhere.

The last time we were at this place a piece of glass was dropped on the second floor and landed in our food. I have nothing good to say.

These people are in fact my neighbors, so I will have to hold my punches on this one. I’m not sure why I would ever order online with them ever again, I did once, and it took over two hours. When I called, they eventually told me that there was only one driver for 3 stores, and he was new today.

Great, thanks alot Quiznos, A little notice would be nice considering this was supposed to be my meal.

Never order Quiznos delivery!

Deep Fried Pretzels. We all love pretzels when they’re salty, we love them even more when they’re deep fried and salty.

Victoria used to frequent this Pub back before the renovation (when it was called The Elephant and Castle) specifically for the bangers and mash along with these deep fried pretzels. We’re both pleased to see these items carried over to the menu after their recent re opening around March 2010.

If you’re downtown, or shopping at the Rideau Centre, this is a great place to stop off, enjoy a beer and grab some delicious appetizers!

(Ouch urban spooners, but I still think the long waits are worth the pretzels! )

Cornerstone Grill – Bad Restaurant Review, Good Food

This review might seem a little strange by the title so let me clarify. The service at Cornerstone is terrible and the ambiance is slightly worse. The place doesn’t look bad, or dirty or anything, it just lacks something. After a very brief wait at the bar (our bar drinks hadn’t even been made yet) we were seated at a table in the middle of a very noisy restaurant.

I’m not one to usually pick apart tiny details, but the tables here are horrible. This is the second time I’ve visited Cornerstone and this is the second time I’ve had to jam my feet under the table in order to sit comfortably. Did the owners not sit in these chairs before ordering them for the restaurant? Maybe they did and I’m just built differently than they are. I also became well acquainted with the furniture while our waitress took about 5 minutes too long to take our orders.

Noise aside. Tables aside. Slow servers aside. The food was pretty good. We started with the Thai Guacamole Dip which is “A fusion of Thai spices and guacamole served with lime salted corn tortilla chips.” A very good Guacamole but not quite enough. There were too many chips left at the end, which seemed a little disappointing. It definitely beats some of the other Guacamole’s in the market though. I would probably order it again if I were there for drinks.

For an entree I had the Roasted Chicken with Pear Chutney which is described in the menu as a “Roasted breast of chicken topped with a vanilla infused pear chutney. Served with seasonal vegetables and roasted potatoes.” This might be worth coming back for on a quiet night . . . if that ever happens at Cornerstone; most night’s its pretty full.

Home of the “$12 French Fries (with a magnificent side order of sirloin steak and Caesar salad)” and a beer menu that requires a second visit just to get to the end of the list!

Situated on the same corner as two other restaurants, Vineyards has the feeling of being a bit hidden away in the city.

Victoria ordered a Hoegaarden beer along with the Cajun Creole Belgian Style Mussels which comes with their (amazing) french fries and mayonnaise.

I ordered a Stella Artois beer along with the Vineyards Belgian Style Mussels and we both got the deep fried Calamari with sour cream dill sauce.

One special note about this place is that you have to walk up to the bar to order your drink, water is also available there when your thirsty for a refill. This is due to the tremendous selection and expertise that the bar staff have regarding pairings and beer choices. A server came for our food orders.

In the evenings a Jazz band plays in the corner, its a very nice touch. I give this 4 out of 5 stars and would definitely go back as its close, central in the ByWard Market and relatively cheap.
